Obituary for Laurent Janssens

JANSSENS, Laurent – It is with saddened hearts, but thanksgiving for a life well lived, that the family of Laurent Janssens announce his passing on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at the age of 92. Beloved husband for 61 years of Georgina. Cherished father of Wayne Janssens (Kathy) of Edmonton, Wendy Swick (Peter) of Welland and Sheila Sabo (Frank) of Fonthill. Proud grandfather of Alyssa McNeil (Jason), Matthew Janssens, Trevor Janssens, Kevin Swick (Trina), Rebbecca Swick, Steven Sabo, Sarah Sabo and great-grandfather of Parker Swick.

Laurent was born in Belgium in 1925 and immigrated to Canada when he was five years old. His family settled in the Simcoe area where Laurent went to work on the Tobacco Farms at a young age. He married Georgina in 1956 and continued to work in several different industries in Simcoe. Laurent, Georgina and their children moved to Brantford in 1967 where he worked for various manufacturers. He spent 22 years as a Brake Press Operator at Trailmobile in Brantford, retiring in 1990. He and Georgina relocated to Welland in 1998 to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Laurent possessed a strong work ethic and dedication to the things he believed in. He was a resourceful man and an avid gardener. Laurent leaves a legacy of what it means to live a life of kindness, integrity, hard work and family values and will be sadly missed.

The family would like the extend a heartfelt thank you to the Villa de Rose Retirement Residence staff and residents, the PSW’s from St. Elizabeth Healthcare, the South Palliative Shared Care Team from Hospice Niagara, Palliative Nurses Kim and Jocelyn from St. Elizabeth Healthcare, CCAC/LIHN and the nurses from the 3rd Floor at the Welland Hospital; the care and compassion that was shown to our husband and father and our family will never be forgotten.

Respecting Laurent’s wishes, cremation has taken place with a private family service at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army with cards available at the H.L.
