Obituary for Harold C "Harry" Smith

SMITH, Harold C. “Harry” - Passed away, suddenly, on Wednesday, January 3, 2017 in his 82nd year. Harry was a banker at the Royal Bank on Rogers Drive and Niagara Street before transferring with the bank to Mackenzie, BC. in 1982. He left the bank to join his wife in their insurance business and then to become a Notary Public. He always put people first and had an admirable work ethic—which he passed on to his three children.

He emigrated from England in the early 50’s and married his first wife—Ann Brownlee, also from England who passed away in 1981. Together, they raised three great children with very little money and lots of love. He will be sorely missed by his eldest son Ian (Elsie) and their children—Wendy (Shawn), Kim (Doug), and Ann (Chris) as well as great grandchildren Sara and Adam, his second son Neil (Marnie) and their children David and Adam, and his daughter Melanie (Claudia).

He married Lynn Berrington in 1983 who felt truly blessed to have inherited three “children of the heart” and to share in the love of the grandchildren and great grandchildren. He takes all the love she has to give in his final journey.

Harry loved to sing and made a joyful sound for many years as a member of the choirs at Christ Church in Niagara Falls, Holy Trinity Church in Mackenzie and Holy Trinity Church in Welland. He was an active member of the Rotary Club in Mackenzie and was honoured to receive the Service Above Self Award and is a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a Fellow of the Institute of Canadian Bankers, was a member of the Canadian Institute of Insurance Brokers as well as being a Notary Public.

He was one of nine children, predeceased by Teddy, Aileen, Jean, June, Syd and George, as well as his parents Robert and Winnifred Smith. His two remaining sisters, Elsie and Maureen, still reside in England. He will be missed also by his brother-in-law, Bryan Berrington (Gail), children Christopher, Amanda, David and their families.

Harry starts this journey alone but will be welcomed with open arms by many friends and family who have travelled this path previously.

Visitation will be held at the H.L. Cudney Funeral Home, 241 West Main Street, Welland on Tuesday, January 9th, 2018 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at Christ Church, 4750 Zimmerman Avenue, Niagara Falls on Wednesday, January 10th at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Church, Niagara Falls or the Kidney Foundation of Canada. Online condolences available at www.cudneyfuneralhome.com
