Obituary for Irene Martha Owen (Goss)

OWEN, Irene (nee Goss) – It is with deep sadness that the family of Irene Owen announces her passing at the Welland Hospital on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 in her 87th year. Beloved wife of the late Edward “Ted” Owen. Cherished mother of David Owen, Judy Streitenfeld (Michael), and Greg Owen. Proud and loving grandmother of Ashley, Crystal, Darcy, Kurt, Madison and great-grandmother of Leks and Makeyn. Dear sister of Melvin Goss (Betty) and sister-in-law of Bob Owen (Fay) and Helen Goss. Sadly missed by several nieces and nephews.Predeceased by her parents Richard and Margaret Goss, son Randy and his wife Debi, daughter Kimberley, grandson Joey, brothers Gordon, Bill, Raymond and sisters Dorothy, Gladys, Violet, Carol and Betty.

Irene was the kind of woman who would never see her grandchildren in store-bought Halloween costumes, so instead she made each and every last princess, ghoul, blue jay and unicorn from scratch. She was the kind of woman who chose books over TV, manhattans over wine, bingo halls over shopping malls and laughter over tears. Irene raised five children with very little help. And though her love was often tough, there was always tenderness behind it. She was a woman who endured a great deal of hardship and pain in her life, but still rose from her bright pink floral bedding every morning to fight life with grace and style. Irene was a pillar of strength in her family. She is loved fiercely by those lucky enough to have known her. And while her fight is now over, we will all take the lessons she taught us to tackle each and every obstacle with the poise and fire that she did.

The family will receive friends at the H.L. Cudney Funeral Home, 241 West Main Street, Welland on Sunday, December 10th beginning at 12 noon. A service to celebrate Irene’s life will begin in the Cudney Chapel at 2 p.m. followed by a reception at St. Charles Village. A private family interment will be held at a later date.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Welland Dialysis clinic for their unwavering and exceptional care and to the Emergency Department at the Welland Hospital for their kindness and support. Also, a very special thank you to all the staff at St Charles Village for their supportive and compassionate care of our mother, which allowed her to live a comfortable and independent life up to the end.

As an expression of sympathy, donations to the Niagara Children’s Centre or the Welland Hospital Dialysis Unit would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences available at www.cudneyfuneralhome.com
