Obituary for Dorothy "Dot" Caroline Hare (Martin)

HARE, Dorothy “Dot” Caroline (nee Martin) – -It is with heavy hearts but with profound thanksgiving for a life well lived that our family announces the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Dorothy Caroline on Monday, December 19, 2016 in her 104th year. Beloved wife of the late Clarence Howard “Harry” Hare (1974). Cherished mother of William Hare (Adele), Raymond Hare (Ida) and mother-in-law of Ruth Hare. Proud grandmother of Catherine “Carrie” Charette (Gord), Raymond Hare (Caitlin Robertson), Nathan Hare (Tiffany) and great-grandmother of Samantha, Elizabeth, Tabitha, Ethan and Heather. Predeceased by her parents Henry Russell (1964) and Caroline Frances Martin (1965), siblings; William Russell Martin (2001), Millicent Frances Garner (1942), Phillis Napper (2007), Jack Henry Martin (1984), Frank Albert Martin (1995) and her long time companion John Nunnemacher (2007). Dorothy’s passion was playing baseball. She played for the Welland Lucky Strikes and won championships in 1931, 1932 and 1933. She won all-Ontario in 1935 while working for Humberstone Shoe Company. She worked at and played baseball for Plymouth Cordage, Humberstone Shoe Company and Simcoe Stars of the Michigan-Ontario League. While in Simcoe she was offered a contract to play for the All American Girls Professional Ball League organized by Mr. Philip K. Wrigley in 1943 (chewing gum mogul and owner of the Chicago Cubs). In her later years she worked in the cafeteria at E.L. Crossley Secondary School. She was named to the Welland Wall of Fame for her baseball achievements in 1996. Dorothy was also a long time member of Glad Tidings Church of God in Fonthill. The family will receive friends at the H.L. Cudney Funeral Home, 241 West Main Street, Welland on Thursday, December 22nd from 6 – 8 p.m. Visitation will continue on Friday, December 23rd beginning at 11 a.m. A service to celebrate and honour Dorothy’s life, conducted by Pastor Daniel Colcagno, will begin in the Cudney Chapel at 1 p.m. Interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Glad Tidings Church of God. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Emergency Room Doctors and staff at the Welland Hospital and to Ellen Martin, Dorothy’s longtime personal support worker.
